How Parents and Social Factors Influence Finances During Ramen-Filled College Years
December 01, 2023 09:36 AM
The years following high school are a time of financial change and stress.[1] High school graduates who opt for a college education often find themselves trading home-cooked meals for microwave ramen. Many college students find themselves with limited funding throughout their education, often graduating with debt.[2] Lacking funds increases the importance of healthy financial habits. After all, to some degree financial success is less about how much you have, and more about how you handle what you have. However, many students do not have the financial resources and information needed to successfully navigate these years. Are there ways in which these young adults can enter college better prepared?

Let's Talk About Sex, Money, and Expectations in Marriage
December 01, 2023 08:59 AM
Sex and money aren’t often mentioned in the same breath, even for married couples. Whether because finances aren’t a particularly romantic subject or because physical intimacy doesn’t seem to factor into the weekly budget, the common view seems to be that these two topics are totally separate. However, these topics do have something clearly in common: neither seems to be an easy topic for couples to discuss, especially when partners feel inexperienced or unhappy with their current situation. Two recent research articles reveal further connections between sex and money.

Feminism and Finances: Does Equal Partnership Make Relationships Better?
August 22, 2023 11:10 AM
Feminism is a belief in equality, fairness, and respect between the sexes. These ideals extend to many different settings and often involve advocacy for women’s rights.1 The ideals of feminism can be seen when sexes are given the same liberties, opportunities, and privileges. In addition, ideals are seen on an individual level when a person treats all others with dignity and consideration. Although exact equality may not be possible in every case given some physical differences between the sexes, equity and the ideals of feminism can be present in every case, along with their benefits.

Financial Distress, Destructive Conflict, and Depressive Symptoms: A Recipe for Happy Families?
August 22, 2023 10:00 AM
Being part of a couple relationship can be sweet...and sometimes sour. Sweet flavors caramelize when we comfort, support, and show love for our partner. Sour flavors ferment when we struggle to solve challenges together, succumb to stress, and feel defeated by depressive mental health symptoms. Making sure one ingredient does not overpower the others is a challenge every couple must face, especially after having a first child. To develop the family relationships that we want to savor, we must not let one ingredient spoil the others. This begs the question, “what spoils our family relationships?” Dr. Curran and colleagues investigated this in a recent study. They asked which of the common challenges (ingredients) that couples/parents face lead to an overwhelming relationship as a whole (spoiled).

What Impact Do Parents Have on Their Children’s Financial Future?
June 07, 2023 08:53 AM
Any parent can attest to the challenges of teaching their children good principles and practices. Indeed, children do not always listen to, remember, or follow the guidance that parents give—no matter how beneficial that guidance may be. Parents may wonder whether or not their efforts are worthwhile.

Better Financial Education from Parents, Better Romantic Relationships for Young Adults?
June 06, 2023 02:52 PM
When you think of how you learned about money as a child and as a teenager, what do you think of? You might remember parental advice about spending and saving, maybe a warning about debt or excessive credit card use, and, possibly, your first piggy bank. Parents’ financial teachings for their children and teenagers are especially important today given the challenges that many emerging adults, those ages 18–30, are facing in the U.S.
